I'm a long time nanny (and newly a part-time NP) and for the past several years, I dress for comfort. Leggings and an over-sized sweatshirt or flannel in the winter, flowy pants/leggings/bike shorts in the summers with a t shirt or casual dress. Very dressed-down and movable clothes. I want to be comfortable while chasing toddlers around the park!
I dress modestly, so no cleavage or belly showing or anything like that, and I always keep my clothes clean and wrinkle-free.
I worked shortly for an NF recently that I wound up leaving due to it not being a good fit for me (lots of reasons), and they wanted to have an "exit interview" which was fine with me.
In our meeting they said I dressed unprofessionally and that lounge clothes and athleisure are inappropriate for work attire.
It made me wonder how many families in the past have had this issue with me and just not said anything.
Do you care how your nanny dresses? What do you expect them to wear to work each day?
Nanny, not employer, but I believe itās something that should come up when discussing job specifics/contract writing, especially if they had an opinion about it. I think itās reasonable to expect a nanny would wear comfortable, casual clothes like athleisure because of the nature of the job. I usually bring it up when we discuss position specifics because I donāt want there to be any miscommunication, and I donāt want to work for someone who would micromanage perfectly acceptable outfits. Additionally, āunprofessionalā is a fairly vague comment and feels kind of silly. What were they expecting you to wear, khakis and a polo?
