Their district decided a month ago to do in person schooling this year. However, none of the schools have central AC and classes are scheduled to start in the middle of August. So yesterday the district announced they are delaying in person start by three weeks. Bomb number one: I’ll be responsible (again) for overseeing distance learning for F9 and M7 for three weeks. Instead of daily check ins, they will be expected to sit in front of their computers for 3 hours at a time. Hoooo boy. This Spring almost did me in with managing the three NK’s distance learning, juggling chrome book time, organizing work...I don’t know if I can do it again.
Bomb number two: they are strongly, strongly considering having me homeschool M7 for the year, or at least the first half. Their district has completely done away with recess and gym. There are no centers, no library, lunch at desks. M7 has (probable) ADHD and ASD. There is absolutely no way he can learn in that environment. MB asked if I was comfortable doing so and I said yes. The district will only provide distance learning in the basics: reading, math, science, so it will be up to me to bring it together and figure out art, social studies, gym, etc.
We have a lot to discuss in the coming days. I’m a little freaked out, but we will manage. I would LOVE to hear from other nannies who are or have been in similar situations: curriculum planning for first grade, distance learning/homeschooling for ASD/ADHD kids.
