Kids have highly contagious illness. Should I have paid time off?
Post Body

Just got told yesterday that one of my nks have hand foot and mouth. Then today, the other one started showing signs and has it too. We just all got over the respiratory illness they had two weeks ago, and I already had to use 3/7 of my sick days at the beginning of the year due to covid. I can't afford to miss work without pay, but I don't want to use sick days when it's not something I got outside of work. I also know if I come in then I am almost guaranteed to catch it and then subsequently miss work from it. Should I ask them to pay me but let me stay home until they are no longer in the contagious period?

Comments

The comments here are really interesting! I usually work when I’m sick if the kids got me sick, and the parents understand that it’ll be a lazy time for all of us and are fine with it. If I’m sick and it’s low symptoms, I go in masked, or if I’m really sick I stay home (they pay me for every sick day I take). I’ve worked with kids with HFM but I had it twice as a kid and I’ve never gotten it as an adult, even when I worked at a preschool center that was SLAMMED with it my first fall there.
