So why was Merlin so affected by the breaking of Gowther's spell? Even Sariel and Tarmiel could at least fight Estarossa while the spell was broken, but Merlin's shock was so great that she stopped her attacks on Chandler and Cusack, Merlin shouldn't know Mael so deeply to be so affected, she was a friend of Elizabeth, but still, nothing indicates that she was very close to Mael, she should not have known more than the fact that he was one of the greatest forces behind the holy war, and perhaps she has seen him a few times, but nothing justifies such a strong reaction, even Zeldris who had known Estarossa for a long time managed to stand firm, unless it was someone who really liked Mael like Ludociel, being paralyzed doesn't seem to make sense, it's simply a plot plot for the return of primordial demon?
