Iām Keira but people have always pronounced it ākee-air-uhā, ākai-ruhā, ākay-ruhā, or ākee-are-uhā. Only once in a blue moon does someone actually say it right and it shocks me every time. Iāve NEVER thought my name was hard to pronounce at all, but it clearly seems to be. Not to mention that people spell it completely wrong too. Iāve had so many wrong coffee shop and store orders over the years. āKira, Kyra, Kiara, Kieraā
not sure how true it is, but my nameās supposedly of irish origin. i always used the actress keira knightley as a point of reference to help people pronounce it, since i was actually named after her! very interesting stuff iām learning here haha
aww thatās good to know! iām on the west coast and i recall only ever knowing 2 other keiraās in elementary school. and maybe one in high school that i was aware of.
praying i pronounce it right, butā¦ rin-dee?
both work and sound the same to me. keer-ah or uh makes the same sound when i say it out loud haha
finally someone who got it right!
haha really, mine is kee rah. too many variations in this name in terms of spelling and pronunciation
i could maybe understand tiffany butā¦ kennedy?! how?! the math isnāt mathing
aww congratulations on your little one. i was named after keira knightley haha. thank you!
iāve definitely seen people mix up tyler and taylor a whole lot š«š«
thank you! and yes, just like the actress. i was named after her. i thought maybe having a famous actress would make the name easier to say butā¦ nope š
i always tell my mom she shouldāve given me an easier name!! weāre not alone though š¤£
because it has different variations like ākira, kyra, kieraā and itās also regional. australianās know how to pronounce keira, and europeans do too. americans say it right but not all the time. it depends on where you live. plus, people are increasingly becoming more illiterate and shitty at phonetics.
thatās such a reach š itās literally an irish name, just anglicized. the nameās been around for a while too, itās not some obscurely rare or weird name. keira knightley, keira from the barbie series, etc.
my mom didnāt come up with my name lol. my dad named me after keira knightly. blame peoples decreasing literacy š¤·āāļø
hello fellow keira! iām pretty sure iāve only met like 4 keiraās in my life. and i donāt think all of them had the exact spelling. i wouldnāt even say our name is so unique to the point people canāt spell or say it.. but because of how many variations it has, i can see why people mix it up so much. kiera, kyra, kira, etc.
depending on where you are it can be. less unique in places like australia definitely. but iāve only ever met like 4 other girls with my name where i live
iāve had some people in the comments say ā99% of people didnāt mess up your parents did, donāt blame usā šš or āthen choose a name thatās easier to pronounceā like sure karen, iāll go back in time to the moment i was born, whisper in my moms ear ādonāt name me keiraā and leave in my time machine.
apologies for my own mispronunciation then šš«¶š
iām taking my guesses at āda-john-ahā or āda-han-ahā (silent j perhaps)
i agree with everything except for the first kiera. that one is also usually pronounced keer-uh since iāve met a couple girls with those names
the variation to this name is always a delight to see and gives me some insight as to why it may be easily mispronounced because thereās so many ways to say itš
feel ya, my grandparents are from mexico so they say mine with muted vowels and an accent haha.
omg like the toilet paper brand? wow š one of my good friends as a kid was named carmen, so iāve always liked that name.
here in my part of the usa itās a struggle to hear it said correctly. your pronunciation is the right one
thatās hilarious knowing i was named after her
i encourage you to look at the sub youāre in, itās kinda the whole point for people to talk about their names that people commonly mispronounce. some people get rightfully frustrated and some donāt. hence why every other commenter is participating, but i guess thereās always someone whoās gotta say āwait, iām different!ā
thatās how my hispanic grandparents pronounce it lol!
what a grand idea, how have i never thought of that before in my years on this earth?
this is the names sub, the whole point is to talk about your name and its pronunciation or mispronunciation
think of the actress keira knightley. itās pronounced kee-rah :)
every variation of this name, whether it be kiera or kyra for example, are prone to being mispronounced and misspelled. blame peopleās increasingly lack of linguistic and phonetic education, instead. aussieās can say it right, no excuse. very ignorant argument š
imagine using that exact argument for every person who has a foreign name. wild
youāre right, let me go back in time in my time machine to when was i born and speak fluent english (as a newborn) to make sure my mom and dad didnāt name me keira. good idea!
i wanted to see if anyone in the comments got it!
