*** NOTE: I hope this is going to the right place considering that I am asking about suggestions for computer names and giving examples of existing machine names. I hope that computer names also fit the definition of "names" for this sub****
Let's just say that at my volunteer job that is slowly crumbling down (e.g. we're only serving current clients only), we as a company seem to have centralized on one single fandom (the Italian-Animated cartoon Winx Club) to the point of there being Winx Club references sprinkled all throughout the entire call center.
Well, I have my own private network within the company for my operations specifically and to allow me to test new software and systems before they go live as not to mess with my love of same and consistency. Well, the below image shows an example of the "network" folder on one of our Remote Desktop Services (RDS) Servers. As you can see, all but two have a Winx reference
Screen 1: The Network Window showing all the computers on my LAN
Let's identify what all those computers do:
- Postoffice: The mail server (Exchange)
- WINX-MAGIX1: Primary Domain Controller (DC)
- WINX-MAGIX2: Backup Domain Controller (DC)
- Alfea3: File Server
- Omega2: Microsoft Dynamics CRM Server
- Darcy909: Microsoft SQL Server
- Waves311: The Remote Desktop Services (RDS) Server. (this one is affectionately known as "central")
- tsclient (same as "Winx-Bloomix314" in the left navigation) that is the computer I'm connecting to the RDS Session from.
- Winx-Router: Obviously it's the router that gets me out to the wider corporate WAN and the internet.
- **BONUS** GRIFFIN-DNS1: This is the "edge router" the absolute last stop for any outbound traffic that leaves my company's network and is destine for the public internet.
So, what do you think of the naming of these computers? Let me know in the comments below.
also, I'm planning on bringing online several more machines for SharePoint, Point of Service, and a few others; what should I name those machines seeing how the first batch are named. I'd love your suggestions in the comments below.
NOTE: Windows computer names can be a maximum of 15 characters and can only have letters (a-z or A-Z), numbers (0-9) and the hyphen (-) character.
