Have I been going to the wrong nail salons or…?

Whenever I’ve gotten acrylics done they looked pretty good, but they always look too thick. I’ve tried a few different places, but it always seems to be the case. While the press ons I’ve tried, have looked thinner and overall better on my hands (but of course they don’t last nearly as long).
Is that just how it is to have acrylics, have I been going to the wrong nail salons, or are my nails the problem?
