How do you manage expensive bike gadgetry here in the city?

I saw in another thread someone mentioned commuting with front and rear cameras. How do you manage running errands and commuting? Do you disconnect and unmount every gadget? Lights can be expensive as well. Do you have to take off all your stuff before you chain up to say run to the bank or something?
