I moved to Brooklyn from Colorado back in July 2021, and I've lived in the same apartment with 2 roommates ever since. I found my current apartment from a Facebook group and moved in on a 6 month sublease. My roommates and I got along so well that I just kept renting the room past the sublease without signing anything.
Now I am planning on moving out of this apartment within the next 5-10 months into a place on my own, but I am concerned that I may run into issues due to my lack of lease documentation proving that I have been renting in New York for the past 3 years. The only record of a signed lease that I have in nyc is my original sublease that I signed from July - December 2021.
I've never lived alone but now that I have the income to, I am approaching unfamiliar territory and I worry that my lack of proof that I've rented in nyc the past 3 years will cause issues in my applications.
Is this a valid concern? Will brokers/rental companies turn me away if I can't show them an up to date lease that I signed? What should I do if so?
For the record, I have a good relationship with the landlord of my current apartment and I have his contact information.
Any insight and advice would be greatly appreciated!
