It was an unusual friendship. He is retired military, 6 foot 2. She is a post grad History student, barely 5 feet tall. They only got together in the local coffee shop.
Their first encounter was when she slammed her textbook closed in frustration, and he asked if she was OK. Hoping to just make the old guy leave her alone, she tried to overwhelm him with details and proceeded to spew off a lot of mid 20th century events that she couldn’t quite tie together.
Much to her surprise, he was a longtime student of military history, with a Master’s degree. His explanation of the connection was smooth, deep, and his words flowed like poetry.
They now talk twice a week, in the same booth, about so much more than just history.
Until, one fateful day…..
