Once a month, Gale has a rusty old truck rattle and wheeze its way up the mountain - braving pumas and baking heat - to deliver supplies. Most of his food comes from the land and his dusty acre of smallholding but as a ranger he spends a lot of time out patrolling with the dogs and he can't fix everything that breaks. Besides, that cake from Mackie's bakery in the town forty miles away is to die for.

He's been seeing the driver regularly for years now, but they almost never talk. The dogs bark, he shouts at them, they shut up. Supplies appear. Sometimes he waves.

But now... Something changed. He's getting tired. They seem distracted. The truck is rustier than it used to be and one of his best friends is grey in the muzzle and slower than she used to be. So this time, he wipes grease from his hands with a fraying old rag and walks over. "Hey. Do you want some coffee or something?"
