I remember reading somewhere that at a group-selection level, it is useful for societies to have a small number of dangerous elements such as psychopaths, terrorists or murderers as it helps that society stay strong and maintain a sense of order from within, similarly to a body having an immune system that is regularly challenged by disease.
That got me thinking that narcissism could be useful when it exists within certain parts of society. For example, a lack of empathy can be advantage in objective decision-making. Furthermore, negative traits like 'sense of entitlement' could, in theory, help challenge a society to ensure that it has proper incentivisiation and doesn't let people achieve success without deserving it.
Can you think of any more advantageous reasons that narcissism could have evolved in a group setting?
