Hi there; not really a noob, but I'm not sure where else to post this question.
I was looking over the rules and noticed that Rule 2 - The Ball is pretty vague about the actual requirements of the ball. Technically, the rule says that the ball should have the shape of a "prolate spheroid" like a rugby ball, but footballs all conventionally have pointed ends. Similarly, the rules literally never mention the laces at all, but they are de facto required on an NFL ball. The only marking required by the rules is the signature of the commissioner.
Obviously, there are some traditional characteristics of the ball that are assumed by the rules by the statement that the ball is "a Wilson." Are these characteristics actually officially defined anywhere, or could Wilson ostensibly make a round-ended ball with no laces and the teams would have to accept it as a legal game ball?
