Suppose the line to gain is the A-40 and the ball carrier A26 is running at a slight angle to the sideline. The ball is in his boundary-side hand and crosses the sideline before any part of his body touches the ground out of bounds. At the first moment that any part of the ball at all is over the sideline, the nose of the ball is right at A-39. At the last moment that any part of the ball is above the inbound area, the nose of the ball is right at A-40. The points where the middle of the ball, or where 50% of the ball (if the orientation of the ball was also at an angle), went out of bounds would be somewhere in the middle.

What is the correct spot of the ball in this situation?
