What is the purpose of the priority diamonds?

In the 2023 official NFL rules, page 5 specifies the shape of the yellow "priority diamonds" located flush with the restricted area and the team area. Then neither of the words "priority" nor "diamond" appear literally anywhere else in the entire rulebook. I wondered about this when I noticed that the specification is absent from page 5 in the 2022 official rules (The field marking has been required for a long time, but the specific mention on page 5 is new). What is the purpose of these field markings?
