This was my first NFA item and suppressor, Iāve had it in my possession since last July and it has honestly changed my whole shooting experience.
Iām the curious type so when I initially looked up how to maintain suppressors and clean them I was largely met with such statements as āuser serviceable cans donāt need to be cleanedā and others. Which is what I ran with for a few months and didnāt worry about it.
Curiosity got the better of me and I searched all around for ways to clean suppressors and have seen everything from using carbon remover to CLR to Mpro 7 and countless others. I ended up settling on CLR since I saw videos on YouTube that showed it cleaning suppressor baffles. However I also found conflicting information about whether CLR would hurt stainless steel or not. But what really sealed the deal was when I ran across a page that discussed cleaning the Surefire RC2 by dunking it in CLR for 24 hours then shooting 5-10 rounds to blow the crap out. So I gave it a try.
Here is the initial weigh in at 19.54 oz: https://imgur.com/a/ZsfCYzc
Here is a picture of the blast baffle: https://imgur.com/a/EOauiG8
I bought these plugs off Amazon and it worked perfectly: https://imgur.com/a/LWzopg0
Here are pics of the CLR at 2, 4, 6 and 9 hours. There was no real difference after 9 hours: https://imgur.com/a/osFW2rF
Went to the range and this was after about a mag of 223 at a fairly high rate. Quite a bit of crap blew out the front and the ejection port. You can see the gold color of the blast baffle: https://imgur.com/a/dkzgiV7
Chunks of carbon continued to fall out throughout the visit. Here is the final weight at 18.73 oz: https://imgur.com/a/HgjiPFr
So nearly an ounce of crap cleaned out. The can had roughly 2500 rounds of 223/5.56 and 7.62x39 along with about 50 rounds of 6.5 Creedmoor.
I donāt have an initial weight prior to firing any rounds through it. But this shows that these can be cleaned when they gain a little carbon weight.
I hope you enjoyed this write up and found it helpful.
Disclaimer: Try this at your own risk and donāt use it on aluminum baffles. I also did my best to keep CLR off and cerakote or nitride. It may or may not do anything but I didnāt want to find out.
