I’m in Newcastle. It’s happening again. Support workers ‘commit’ and then out of the blue I get a msg saying they’ve been unwell because they can’t handle me. I have just been diagnosed with ADHD at 65 yrs old. I can’t help having ADHD and the challenges it brings. I also have CPTSD which was being used as a reason for all of my difficulties. Now we know that’s not the case. Symptoms and behaviours that aren’t CPTSD. I also have a disability called Cervical Dystonia which means I can’t drive, walk anywhere because al I see is the pavement, can’t go swimming, can’t go cycling etc. I’m having an operation to correct the Cervical Dystonia, it ain’t cure it. It will help manage it and will give me back a certain amount of movement. I have been going down to Westmead Hospital for 2 and a half yrs. It’s too complex to explain why I’ve had to see the treating team for so long. One reason is because they had to find out why, at 57 yrs old I started having the condition. I’ve had a support worker for 3 mths. She was keen to support me anyway she could and ‘commuted’ herself. I got a msg this morning that supporting me has caused her to be unwell and I had just one more appointment to get me over the the line to give me a surgery date. With my ADHD at times things are incredibly stressful and I try so hard not to put that in my support workers so that they don’t do what this support worker has done. Now I don’t have support, suddenly. I’m a nice person with a great sense of humour even though life is incredibly difficult. I honestly do not know what I could have done better. This is happening because support workers don’t have to have any qualifications and think it’s an easy job. If I put in all of my requirements into the Mable app(I’ve been using Mable for about 9 mths) I get no one support worker. If anyone can give me suggestions, advice, anything please. I’m at my wits end. Sitting here feeling sick to my stomach. Why do support workers say they can do it and then bail? I don’t need a cleaner(o have one with ADHD and we work well together), food prep(I get subsidised by NDIS for food prep and delivery, personal care(I’m independent). I pay if I cancel within 24 hrs and it’s only fair I pay for a minimum of 2 hrs if the shift is shorter and I pay for mileage within support hrs. I don’t know how I can be more fair. Hey everyone, thank you for your kind comments and suggestions of help. I’ve got a contract and have talked with an organisation today. Here we go again but what can you do. I don’t want to cave in.
