Its a big excuse for why russia invaded because they think some ukrainians want to be part of russia but is this actually proven anywhere?

In addition to the nation-wide polls referenced in the other comments, you can point when the same argument is being applied to Crimea (which vatniks and peaceniks like to focus on for obvious reasons) that Crimea had a pro-union with ruZZia party “Soyuz” and it gained a grand total of 5% of votes in the local elections in 2010.
