Never posted any photo's of my ride, so I thought I'd finally share! Here's my 1997 V6 with Hand Controls.
Post Body

Hi everyone! Here's the photo's I'll know you guys will want.

So I've had this car since I was 15, but I've never officially shared it here. It is mostly a weekend toy, since I need to have my electric wheelchair to get around. Since a lot of people ask, I'll give you guys a little about my entire story.

A little about me:

Due to a birth complication, I wound up being diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at the age of 2. Thankfully I got off relatively easy compared to many others. My wrists and walking ability are the only main things affected. I spent most of my life around cars, thanks to my Dad and my step-brother. My parents always treated me as though I was not disabled, and well driving was a big part of that. Having grown up around cars, I naturally gravitated towards muscle/pony cars. When it was time for me to learn to drive, I wanted something reflective of this interest. My dad having been a car guy (and an overprotective parent) didn't want me to have a V8, so this was the compromise haha.

This car pretty much pulled me out of my shell in high school, and for lack of a better way to put it; set me on the right path again. During my early high school years I was in a depressed state over my disability, and didn't get out of the house much. I was unhappy with my life in general, and had no motivation to really do anything except sit in front of a computer screen. If it hadn't been for my car, I never would have gotten involved in the car community, and in turn "snapped out" of my depression as quickly as I did. I'm now a senior in college, pursuing a degree in I.T.

The car itself

Here's a break down of the work done to the vehicle:

  • Zero effort steering and braking (driven by an air system)
  • Push/pull hand controls
  • Steering knob
  • Custom modified gear shift (moved the shift lock button to the top of the gear shift)
  • The car has been resprayed Deep Impact Blue
  • Entirely new bumper, headlight assembly, and headlight support
  • '18 inch Rovos Durbans with Sumitomo HTZ III tires (255 in front, 285 out back)
  • Carbon fiber saleen style rear spoiler

So what're my future plans?

At the moment I've kinda hit the end of the road with this chassis. It was wrecked before I acquired it so the paint hides some questionable bodywork, and at the end of the day I cannot haul an electric wheelchair with it. If I stay with the SN95 platform, I'll be looking to swap everything over to a new chassis with either a turbo'd 4v or coyote engine. If I move on from it however, I'd love to get into a Termi cobra with an auto swap (I can't operate a manual with NC's laws on hand controls) or if I'm really dreaming an S197/S550 on a whipple.

Why even bother building the v6 chassis?

To be honest, cost was the biggest factor. The hand control system I have ranges from 10-12k depending on the installer, and that's with labor. Funds have always been a factor, and to be honest I've got a certain attachment to the car. I wanted to show other handicapped people that their life doesn't have to be defined by the wheelchair, and in turn that anything is possible. I've had just as much fun taking my little V6 down the 1/8th mile as anyone, even though it's incredibly slow lol. I've taken this car to a few shows and received a VERY positive response, with tons of people asking questions. In the end I'd say I've achieved my goals.

Sorry for the long post!

TL;DR: I'm handicapped and have a mustang as a weekend car.
