Hello, I'm a freshman in college currently majoring in biology, but having second thoughts about whether or not I- a) want to do biology and b) stop doing music on a daily basis. I've been in band since 6th grade and every year since then it has been the most enjoyable part of my school day. I figured I'd just keep playing in band for fun through college and adulthood, but now that I'm doing science stuff for 80% of the day, I find myself wishing I was doing music instead.
Which brings me to my question(s): Why did you decide you want to teach music, and what (if any) doubts did you have?
I think my main reason now is to give kids the best opportunity possible to have the same love and passion of band I was fortunate enough to enjoy in middle and high school. I think this is due in large part to having very good band directors in my time at school, which gets to my fear- I'm very afraid that I would be a terrible band director. I'm not normally very good at explaining things, and I also struggle with simple things like telling if I'm in tune with the band by ear. Did anyone else have concerns like these, and if anyone switched to music ed in college after thinking they would do something else, could you share your experience?
Any and all input would be greatly appreciated, or any other advice for that matter. Thanks!
