I only listened to some of the 1989 songs, but the originals had significantly more effort put into recording a memorable/catchy vocal. Max Martin is the man when it comes to pop, and he wasn't involved with the re-release.

Much of her pop success (1989) is from Max Martin, the producer, who helps create the beats and samples (not really a band/musician situation) - he wasn't involved with the re-release.

Interesting you mentioned 'when she takes a breath' -- "Out of the Woods" was the one I listened the closest too, and I picked a single phrase (pre-chorus) and it's missing breathes, vibrato, intensity, ... feels like they scrimped on vocal production during record and/or mixing. The original was Max Martin's work, which is a high bar
