So there have been some discussions on this and other subreddits regarding the Taylor Swift Phenomenon that seems to be sweeping the entertainment world, in that she's seemingly everywhere and everything she touches or is involved with seems to get a massive amount of social media attention as well as in the mainstream media as well, and not just the entertainment parts. People are wondering why she is so popular, and how she compares to similar entertainment icons of the past, such as Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson, etc.
For grins, I took a look at this week's Billboard Top 100, and was absolutely stunned with what I saw. Drake, an extremely popular artist in his own right, holds down the following chart entries: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11, 12, 15, 16, 17, 18, 20, 21, 24, 26, 27, 29, 32, 36, 37, 42, and 59. To say this is historic is probably an understatement. In contrast, Taylor Swift has entries #9 and #41.
In terms of musical popularity, it would seem that Drake is doing things with his music that no artist has ever done before, at least none that I can think of.... maybe the Beatles in the early-mid 60s when they first broke out to the American market. But I don't see Drake commanding the cultural frenzy and impact that Ms. Swift is currently enjoying.
The obvious differences come to mind: she's an attractive single white female, bubbly personality, VERY managed public persona with a rabid fanbase that makes Beyonce's look tame. But in terms of cultural impact, they seem relatively close, at least on paper.
What do you all think?
