Hello, my name is Rexx. I grew up in the 1990s and this is an ever-expanding story about me. It was a time of creativity, wonder and an incredible music and art culture. It brought us a new era of social interaction and change. Suddenly, things that weren't important before were in focus and our view of the world would forever change. The 90's had such an impact on pop culture that to this very day, people of all ages, from all over the world find it strangely exotic and compelling. Much like people that are infatuated with the Royal family or true crime stories, many people today have this strange draw to the music of Nirvana. or the tragic story of their frontman Mr. Kurt Cobain. As a kid who was brought up in a strict Hispanic home, I was pretty well preserved. Naive, not very good around girls, kind of stupid really. Until the day I heard, Guns and Roses blasting from my older sister's first car. That was a moment of shock and clarity at the same time. I felt like... "But why is this man cursing at me while singing so melodically?" I was almost scared... No, I was scared to listen to Appetite for Destruction above a certain volume in fear that my parents would catch me, and somehow understand what Axel was saying. (Side note: My folks were immigrants who honestly to the day, still do not speak English very well) I was sure they'd ground me for the rest of my life and accuse me of worshiping Satan. That is not a made-up anecdote, but you would have to tune in to find out why. So I became all about the music and rebelling in secret although it was a little over my head for my age. I was so intrigued with the bad boy aspect of it, that I didn't realize the power this stuff had over my older sister who was a true hair metalhead. It wasn't until I went to a party at my friend's house when I was 11 or 12 that I would wake up to the world around me. I was born and raised in Miami FL, so parties consisted of a backyard, a DJ playing a mix of Salsa music, Bel Biv Devo, Vanilla Ice and Mc Hammer, Red Solo cups and speakers that you could hear four blocks away. I remember my parents dropping me off. There was music playing as usual and people everywhere were wearing bolo ties and Z Caverichi puffy pants. Walking into any party was like a slow-motion scene from a really bad movie about a guy wearing his sunglasses at night. That's when I heard this jarring guitar riff that seemed simple enough but felt so very different from what we were used to. And I think everyone had this same feeling the first time they hear the drums and bass kick in, it was like a BOOOOM inside the core of your soul! Smells Like Teen Spirit had taken over this party and people lost their freaking minds. Chairs were flying everywhere, and some guys started a moshpit. I even remember a couple of people acquiring black eyes that night. Suddenly I felt like my ears became muffled and I thought to myself, Oh my god, this is where I belong! This is when my head burst into motion. All my insides were turning. It was like watching a movie right in front of my eyes. It was history in the making and our minds somehow were freed. We were liberated from the past ideals of things like racism, sexism, alternative sexual preferences, bullying, religion and conformity. We suddenly understood a new way of expressing ourselves without boundaries or labeling each other. All while blasting music from bands like the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Pearl Jam and Sublime, which we lovingly accepted as the soundtrack to our lives. We were the first kids to take on the internet, which at the time we mostly used to find the lyrics to our favorite songs.. Now we run the show. We are the parents, teachers and doctors. We decide what happens in our schools, in politics and in religion and I think the time has come to remind everyone of their roots. 'Speaking as a child of the '90s' is an in-depth look into the mind of a kid that went from having to physically go to the library to learn ANYTHING outside of school hours, to a teenager who was there to help usher in the future with a keyboard and mouse. Music is a big part of my life and will be a major topic of conversation of my show. Together we will revisit the past and find out what aged well and what did not. We will cover infamous stories, Pictures, trends, toys, cars and even the smells and flavors of the time. I want to interview big names and discuss the differences in the choices we had to make then as compared to the ones we have now. I want to engage a new young audience and show them where some of the freedoms we have today come from while reminding the more mature audience to maybe not be so mature. We will laugh, get angry, argue about current and past events and challenge the social norms of today much like we did then. We will look back on things like OJ, Friends, Fight Club, Wayne's World, Bill Clinton and so much more. I'm ready to openly talk about topics that no one ever talks about. I want to hear public opinion and what we think comes next. 'Speaking as a Child of the 90s' is all about you and me, Sex, Drugs, and Rock n' Roll, human relationships and interactions and the past, present and future ahead of us. I want to cover anything and everything while sharing a laugh and maybe peeing our pants a little.
