There's debate of how long an LP has to be a in order to be considered a LP. I'd say it's 30 minutes. Anything shorter is an EP or a single, anything longer is an LP.
The Richard D. James album by Aphex Twin is 32 minutes long, roughly, although the "Come to Daddy EP" is 33 minutes long and is listed so on Spotify--although truly, it's long enough to be considered an album. At least, a "mini-album". Ye's "Jesus is King" on the other hand, is only 27 minutes although it's marketed as an LP. I feel as if this is unfair. Bibio's "Sleep on the Wing" is almost an LP, but not quite at 28 minutes--even if there's 10 tracks, they're all fairly short.
I guess the difference between an EP and LP is mostly length. I feel like an EP should be something you can listen to on a drive to the grocery store or work, perhaps something to ease you over while you wait for a longer release from an artists. It's short and cohesive, and delivers the theme or "punch" of the album quickly.
An LP? I feel like it should be a musical journey of sorts. Something you listen to on a walk or a longer drive. A long drive in my mind, is anything over a half hour. Anything over a half hour is a more serious commitment of listening.
What do you guys think? Should 30 minutes be the cut off for an album?
