I want to try to pursue a career in exhibit design. It has been a dream of mine since I was a child. I have looked into this via videos and by informational interviews to people who have worked on designing exhibit at a museum that I worked for. I know what I am most interested in is content development, though I do think the actual designing of the exhibits is also very interesting.
I'm just not sure what is the best thing to do next. I am currently working in a museum and have spent my museum career working as an interpreter starting October 2014 and there was a little over a year and a half where I wasn't working at a museum and did a bit of education, retail, operations, and visitor service. I spoke with a career counselor about how to get on this path. Talked about going back to school to be able to get internships. Also, the idea of getting a certification where I would come away with a portfolio.
The certification path I see as much harder, maybe impossible. I'd likely have to network quite a bit I have my own connections and know of organizations for museum people, and I'm sure they would know people in design firms. The degree path is longer and costs more, I would have to start with a BA, because I have a degree in physics (2015) and I would need to submit a portfolio to get into a masters program. Does anyone have some advice?
