How to Improve at game?

So I’m pretty decent at Multiversus, I win a fair amount of matches or even if I lose most feel like a close game. However, an issue I have is playing against certain people who seem to have crossed a certain skill barrier that I don’t understand. It’s the scale seems to be someone is bad, not too bad, good, pretty good then suddenly the scale jumps to an untouchable god. When I say this I mean when I play someone, and they dodge every one of my moves, but I seemingly can’t dodge any of theirs, they get me in combos/hit me nonstop, even if I’m in range they always seem to get the attack first, and they move around the map like butter on a hot pan. I know of a few things like dodge jumping and stuff, and I know most people are going to say the obvious, play more/get good (yes I’ve done the advanced tutorials) and while I agree that is generally the best way, I don’t want to keep playing aimlessly, if there are certain skills/techniques to focus on improving or learning in order to cross that skill barrier I’d like to learn about them so I can play with intention. At the moment I’m switching around characters to max them out but know it’s better to have a main, so any suggestions for a good main, and for skills and techniques either character specific or general to the game would be greatly appreciated.
