Hair product to style straight hair?

Have had a mullet for few years now but never really styled it, just let it air dry and try and see how it turns out but I want to actually put some effort into it and dk where to start. I've seen sea salt spray but there's some caution with it, is clay any good? or is it the wrong type of styling?
