I find it hard to find up to date reviews of gyms, so here is my review and thoughts on PK Saenchai Gym. Happy to answer questions!
TLDR: If you are looking to live and fight in Thailand longterm there is no better place to go. If you are beginner, you will get in good work, but it may feel overwhelming. If you have experience but are not looking to fight, it's 100% what you make of it.
Training - Morning session. The Thais and foreigners who are training hard/training for a fight motorbike to a park about 15 minutes away. 1 hr long run at the park. Motorbike back to the gym. Knees, teeps, and kicks on the bag, some shadow boxing, and weight training. Sometimes there are group bodyweight training exercises or technique breakdowns. If you are getting ready for a fight, or have very beginner technique, you will get pads. Mornings are usually pretty light overall.
Afternoon sessions. Twenty minute run on treadmill or outside of the gym. Then jump rope. 6, 4 minute, rounds on the pads. Then some combination of clinching, bagwork, boxing sparring, or regular sparring. This is a Bangkok style gym, where the fighters are fighting often and at a very high level. Very rarely are the Thais full Muay Thai sparring. Clinching happens almost every session, and boxing sparring typically every other day/once every 3 days.
Again, this gym is really focused on top level fighters and fighting. Being proficient at Muay Thai, training hard and not fighting, to them is probably like working a day job, putting in the hours and then refusing your weekly paycheck. If you are relatively skilled at Muay Thai but are not fighting, you will have to assert yourself into situations--which isn't looked down upon. Ask people if they want to spar, jump into clinch sessions etc. This is not a gym where everything is structured down to the minute. Typically, you have one or two primary pad holders, every once in the while rotating to other folks. It is a great mix of consistency and variation.
Location - Suburb of Bangkok. Very close to a major overpass. Definitely not pretty, but nothing wrong with it. Everything you need--a big mall with a good food court, convenience stores, markets, access to central Bangkok--is easily accessible or close by.
Accommodations - The # of foreigners at the gym seems to be growing. There are rooms next to the Thai fighter rooms and rooms 4 or 5 blocks away. Both are simple but absolutely adequate. You have your own bathroom, AC, and single room. Nothing else is needed!
Food - Absolutely delicious. You get two meals a day. Breakfast is typically a bit lighter with 3 options, rice and hard boiled eggs. Dinner is usually a massive spread. It's actually quite hard to drop weight even with all of the training. The food is really great.
Overall Thoughts - If you are looking to live and fight in Thailand long term, I couldn't think of a better place. The emphasis of the gym is on fighting consistently. There are clear connections to Lumpinee, SuperChamp, One FC, Asiatechque for newer folks, and a slew of other domestic and international promotions. You are training around the who's who of Muay Thai and getting ragged dolled daily. The level is out of this world.
If you are a beginner, this may not be the best gym, but you will get pads twice a day, see Muay Thai at its very best, and interact with some of this eras best fighters--Wangchalong, Rodlek, Tawanchai, Muangthai, etc. etc. It sort of depends on what you want.
If you have experience but aren't looking to fight or are there for just a short period of time, you are in a bit of limbo. You will get pads every afternoon session--but because you know what you are doing but are not fighting, you are not a priority--which makes sense. It is a bit up to you to get what you want/need out of the gym. Women definitely are a bit sectioned off, which is something to consider if you are a female practitioner. Hope this helps anyone gym shopping. Of course gyms change depending on # of foreigners, trainers, etc. etc. So take this whole thing for what you want.
