In many threads, I’ve had the same discussion with lots of people about a throwback Challenge more like the first 10 seasons where it was more like a vacation with a bunch of young people enjoying themselves, with less intense challenges, lower cash rewards, and straight up just more old school fun and shenanigans. Several people responded by saying there is such a show: “All Star Shore” which is available on Paramount .
After watching about 5 minutes of the first episode, I felt compelled to make this post, because All Star Shore absolutely fails to capture what I believe most of us would like to see from a throwback Challenge. This show features all social media personalities from various shows whose every move is curated for their marketability and image with some contests thrown in to galvanize drama. These are professional image chasers, not random real life college aged kids thrown into the BMP reality tv blender, like old school Real World/Road Rules. If you enjoy shows like Flavor of Love or Bad Girls Club, All Star Shore is for you, but it’s a far cry from what I and many others would love to see from The Challenge.
I propose going old school with casting calls across college campuses for fresh faces who don’t already have social media sponsors and hundreds of thousands followers. People down to compete in random challenges with strangers in a cool spot, while given loads of good food and alcohol. Where they’re removed from their phones and social media the duration of the challenge allowing for the chips to fall where they may. I’m talking about regular people, not those who have focused on building a curated image or set out to become a reality tv star.
I think this would be far more effective at generating more of that organic old school drama that caused so many of us to love the Challenge in the first place and potentially develop some new blood for the main Challenge show.
Come on BMP, MTV, CBS, Paramount! This can be done easily, as those old school Challenge seasons cost nothing to produce, yet it could produce great television and a new Challenge legacy. All I know is All Star Shore is not the answer.
