A small bit of history
Post Body

I was scrolling across the r/mtaugusta sub today and I happened across someone with the algerian flag flair. I noticed a smattering of users still have this flair. The flair has an interesting in-game history that stretches back into the earliest history of Mt. Augusta itself.

Back in 2012, the first iteration of Mt. Augusta was trapped between the vouchers and the civvies during the first HCF war. The peripheral areas of the city became dilapidated and run down, prone to violence and vandalism. I moved in to the westernmost neighborhood in the city at that time, and promptly took over first my apartment block, then the neighbouring buildings, then building a mosque and replacing the street names without consulting anyone. I christened the neighbourhood "The Algerian Quarter", after the new mosque, who's name was Masjid ul-Jaza'ir. I received several strongly-worded warnings from city officials, but ultimately, this is where the civ-algerian flag from the flair was first born, fluttering above the war-torn apartment buildings hiding in the shadows of the western wall.

When the First Augustan Civil War hit in the middle of the year, the Algerian neighborhood found itself isolated from the central governments in downtown Augusta vying for control. While the eastern peripheries of Augusta declared independence under various socialist, lenninist and trotskyist polities, the western neighborhoods were scourged by Lifetime0fwar's raider crew who actually used the Algerian neighborhood as his base of operations. Lifetime0fwar battled Augustan loyalist forces under the command of RonPaul2012 and eventually fled, leaving a power vacuum and loot. Locals from the Algerian neighborhood seized the weapons and promptly declared themselves independent, occupying and building barricades around our neighborhood. Independence was short-lived, however, as the loyalist brigade under RonPaul2012 arrived at the Algerian neighborhood to restore order. Negotiations began within the Masjid ul-Jaza'ir, and in the end, the Augustan regime decided to grant the Algerian neighborhood regional autonomy. It was at this time that the Algerian flag was added to the subreddit as one of Augusta's "provincial flags", along with the old Luvsjak flag.

Today, 7 years later, Mt. Augusta is far removed from the first iteration, and the Algerian neighborhood as well as the First Civil War are long forgotten, but it's funny to see how the flag lives on all to this day.
