Confusion with S2:E7 (Watch out for snakes)

Hi all, I’m confused with Series 2, Episode 7, more specifically when Ray goes to camp out around a 100 metres from the house. Dave gets out the car with Vinnie, and looks up to Ray, as if he could see a small light or glare. I’m confused to whether or not Dave knew he was there, or was Ray surprised that Dave was with Vinnie, given the look on his face after.

Overall can someone explain the scene/part of the episode as I haven’t really understood it having watched the series twice.
