Hello there,
Over the last few days as many of you may, or may not, have noticed the Writers Guild of America has called a strike for the first time in over 13 years. This lit a fuse in my head about our industry or as the company likes to refer to it âthe entertainment industryâ.
Since we are âpartâ of this collective to deliver entertainment to the masses, flood the companies, studios, shareholdersâ pockets with millions and billions of dollars I find myself asking âwhy arenât we protected and compensated fairly?â. We flimsily are misused and underpaid because the company needs to average out whether attendance for a given week warrants having the hours for staff.
Weâre expected to go above and beyond and âfigure it outâ because the cost of simply fixing a leak, remodeling urine ingrained bathrooms, or fully pest controlling a space is âtoo muchâ, but the cost of ridiculous outsourcing of advertising and supplemental income programs is fine.
This strike has just had me thinking when will be given a chance to stand up and say enough to the demanding and exhausting weekends, unreported injuries, continued mismanagement and lack of security for our coworkers in the face of a continuing pandemic that the company has now claimed âOverâ.
All this talk over exploited workers and yet its us, the people whose job it is to serve popcorn with a smile on our face pretending everything is fine as customers harass us over missing items, cough/sneeze onto us, leave ridiculous messes that we dont get paid enough to actually deal with. When is enough, enough? Do we get to strike? Should we? I think now is the time for all the exploitation to stop. Everywhere.
