Fuck Jimbo, of course, but I thought it was a very brave and bold move on the part of the dev to put the pov on him - I mean, most games usually don't want to put pov on such an utter pos, so you know? And that is why I think it is important to just how fucking good the game is - because the game is about a lot of things, from men/women dynamics to responsibility and etc., but one thing I don't see people talking about super often is just that, schizophrenia.
There are hints throughout the game that the workers are not being treated well (shocker) and we all know that little sleep and a lot of stress can do to people. And this is where Jimmy comes in - he is a monster, but he honestly believes that everything that he does is for the better because that is how far gone in his head it is. To me as a person who is struggling with these sort of disorders, the visual of Jimmy literally CHOOSING to ignore Anya's existence after her suicide (because he couldn't work it into his framework) and the scene where he kills Swansea (where he is completely detached from the conversation) are simply bone chilling.
It's like uncanny things, right? Liminal space? But those are uncanny physical - objects that are not right even though they sorta look right. This is what I have with Jimmy - uncanny. Looking at a functional person who is THAT detached is just...it's just wrong, right? Because of that, Jimbo killing Swansea has to be the single scariest game scene there is - just the way he replies to him, ugh, makes me wanna puke. Only second to Jimmy breaking down in front of Curly (because you realize that Curly can't talk)
Perhaps I am reaching too far, but art exists to touch people, and this is how I was touched - to me, on top of everything else (again, very fucking dense game, right?) Mouthwashing is also, simply put, about schizophrenia. Not just mental illnesses, but those that detach you from the reality, this horror of doing wrong not because you are wrong, but because you literally don't have the read on what is actually happening. That is why I thought that it was a very clever touch to also give same hallucinations to Curly.
There is a lot to say about this game, so I just wanted to add my two cents, I guess - horror goty of 2024, ez
