I'm planning to climb Hood this weekend (early Sat morning). It's supposed to be clear weather, but itll be the first warm spell after about 26" of snow last week, with highs/lows of 37F/54F at 9600' Friday and Friday night. My thought is that wet slabs will be a problem, especially on south facing aspects like the old chute and pearly gates routes.
I'd love to hear others' assessments of potential avy conditions this weekend. Would this be a good weekend for a summit attempt, or should I try again later?
Get up and get down in a real hurry. Not sure what freezing level will do overnight but if freezing level is staying above 9,000 ft overnight (and especially worse if it does that the night before as well) that could mean some pretty risky slabs. TBH my bigger concern would be all of the rime that has formed overhead would be falling down on you as it melts off. There will likely be a herd of idiots so you won't be moving fast through the most dangerous areas where that would be falling off on you. Save it for another day or just go back country skiing up to hogs back. I wouldn't go out there this weekend
