mongoose ardor rear hub. help please.

I got this bike from a friend a few days ago and it came with the freewheel off of the rear wheel with no axle. I bought a new axle, tried installing it but on the drive side the axle moves an hits the sides of the hub. does it need a certain type of spacer on the axle is self? sealed bearings? or is it broken?
both sides should look identical where the bearings sit, right?
