Any tips for a somewhat newcomer?

I’ve always had history with MK, played majority of the games but I could never put together decent combos, it wasn’t until like a month ago I’d actually pull off good combos in 11, now I really wanna get good with 1, any tips for good strings? These are the characters I’ll likely play with most (wanted to use Johnny cage but I think everyone and their niece will use him and I hate mirror matches)
