Advice for a newbie
Post Body

Hi so I'm very new to biking and I've read all the rules I could find online but I still find myself doing some stupid stuff on the streets sometimes (lacking that irl experience) so I'm wondering if anyone has any advice, on things that are common knowledge or insider info, and how to be more safe in general.

So I first started biking this summer, and first did it only in parks until I got the courage to go on a bike path, and learned how to cross lights, turn, signal etc. I have read many websites listing traffic rules and giving advice but often I realize none of it measures up to actual experience on the street of people biking for years. I tried to follow all the rules and be very safe, but I wasn't very experienced and there have been some moments where I did something stupid.

Though these stupid moments were relatively rare (only a handful across 4 months). The first stupid moment was when I was biking and someone opened their door and I ALMOST did not see it but I did at the last minute. That was very dangerous. The second stupid momenttt was accidentally going in the opposite direction on a one way street. That was back when I first started, and I should've known that but in the moment, I didn't think. LESSON LEARNED (nothing happened but people stared at me and one person honked). The third stupid moment wasss I was on the right of a bus and I tried to pass next to it and I thought it was gonna squish me (it wasn't, but still scary). The fourth stupid moment happened on this small street with many stop signs and me and the car both stopping and not knowing when to go. I found out recently that the person that comes to a full stop first has the right of way. Didn't know that before and was super awkward in knowing when to go.

I guess the other thing I noticed I do is overstopping at red lights. I know sometimes other bikers just pass because there are no cars/pedestrians coming but I can never tell when it's actually safe to do so, so I feel like I overstop at red lights and often a more seasoned biker behind me will pass me while I wait haha.

Idk if I'm just being an annoying bixi rider so I wanna learn all the rules and etiquette that more experienced people seem to know, stuff I can't find online. Please give me advice
