Can my kid ride on the sidewalk?

Hello, my family and I will be spending the month of August in Montreal. We don't have a car. We usually use transit and bikes to get places.
My kid is 4 years old. Where we live he usually rides on the sidewalk and I ride on the road next to him.
Is he allowed to ride his bicycle on the sidewalk in Montreal? Will we get in trouble if we do it? Is there anything we should know?
If it makes any difference, it would be mostly from the subway station to a day camp in Verdun, about 1km each way.
