How to make Morsels trigger their "special attack"

I just finished my first run with Penumbra. During the final boss I had about six Morsels out, and suddenly they cleared the board doing 150 to everything; what happened here?
It occurred when I was fighting the last boss. I feel like the words "Morsel Blitz/Barrage" popped up.
