What is a better mid game hbg setup, pierce or spread?

Recently switched to hbg, really loving the playstyle, but not sure what to shot type to gear toward. I have the first legiana hbg for pierce but it seems really weak, then i have a rarity 5 great jagras hbg for spread, but i seem to be hitting a wall on spread shot with pretty much all the monsters in elders recess. Anyone got any tips to steer me in the right direction gear wise?
