At one point dragons were the dominant species on this planet, but being at the top of the food chain led to complacency. Humans, once considered nothing more than a nuisance, developed weapons and grew civilizations while the old lizards rested in their caves, content that they could continue doing as they pleased. They would pay for this, not only with the near extinction of their species, but also their near complete removal from history. Oh there still existed "tall tales" describing them, but it was decided that they would not be remembered as the once great race they truly were. And so in desperation the few survivors fled wherever they could, surviving however they could.
I know absolutely none of this. In modern times there's no need for anyone to believe in dragons, much less some random woman on a walking trail. So when I walk past your cave as I have hundreds of times before, I think nothing of it. I can't feel your reptilian eyes burning holes into the back of my head as you study me again. Plenty of people had walked that trail, some had even tried exploring the cave, but a few growls were usually enough to scare them off without revealing yourself. They were unimportant, random faces you would likely never see again. Me on the other hand, you had grown to know my face, my body, my scent. I lived relatively close to the forest and made a big habit out of walking this trail, occasionally my husband would accompany me, but not nearly enough for you to study him like you did me.
You had been taught to avoid humans, if you were discovered they would surely send men to slay you and that would be that. It had been so long since you'd seen another dragon, you couldn't risk yourself now. Not that anyone had seen a true dragon for thousands of years, if there were any left somehow they had committed to complete solitude long ago. You were a result of desperation, breeding with humans to keep the species alive at any cost. This had resulted in a race that could take on the form of a large, true dragon with enough concentration, but in actuality held a much smaller and human-like form. You still had scales, wings, horns, claws, and could even somewhat breath fire in this form. However, you were roughly the same shape and size as a human, something that the true dragons considered an abomination when they were still around. And now you were alone, hunting what you could when you could, waiting for something to change.
Then one day, today, something did. While the skies seemed clear you could sense that a storm was coming, so you were surprised to see me walking past your cave like nothing was wrong. For a moment you felt concern, but ignored it as there was no point in feeling concern for a human. You figured the dumb human would be fine, and it wouldn't matter either way.
It didn't take long for the storm to roll in after that, the sky darkened and rain poured down from above. Thunder and flashes of lighting came as well, illuminating you as you stared out at the empty trail. I still hadn't made the return trip, you could feel your heart beating faster as you thought about this. Before you could consider doing something rash I finally came into view, running awkwardly down the trail with a coat over my head. As I started to pass your cave lighting struck the trail in front of me, you could see the terror on my face. I let out a small scream as I staggered backwards, then looked over to the cave. It looked cold, dark, but most importantly dry. That was enough for me to run off of the trail and unknowingly towards you. Realizing what was happening your heart started beating even faster as your eyes widened, you quietly hid yourself deeper within the cave before I could come inside and see you. You couldn't bring yourself to scare me off as you had the others, but you also couldn't let me see you.
Hours pass and the storm shows no sign of letting up. You've been silently observing me and have picked up on a few things. My phone was still working and I, Jen, was able to let my husband, Sam, know that I had taken shelter. He was unable to come to me because things were even worse where he was, but he promised to come once the storm was gone. In the meantime I had grown very cold and dragged in some sticks from outside, likely in an attempt to make a fire. And so, courtesy of your excellent natural night vision, you've been watching me sit in complete darkness and soaking wet clothes as I try and fail to make a fire. The shivering wasn't so bad at first, but now I can barely hold the sticks in my hand due to how bad I'm shaking. You know I'll die in this state, and you can't take this anymore.
My head jerks up as the sounds of footsteps grows louder, try as I might I cannot see into the darkness of the cave behind me. I realize some animal was likely living here, or maybe someone else had taken shelter before me. Either way, the fear and cold are more than enough to hold me in place as I whisper out a simple, "...hello?"
From here the story can go however you'd like, I'd love to brainstorm the possibilities with you. Personally, I see us growing close together in the cave and continuing that relationship even after I go home. Whether that means I make more frequent trips to your cave or you follow me back to my house is up in the air.
I won't go into much further detail, the prompt is long enough as is. I will say that if my face doesn't end up in a dragon butt I will be very sad.
I also have a bunch of refs here if you'd like some inspiration.
