Last year, my grandmother sent me a box of my toys from when I was a child, dress ups things, puzzles, tea set, stuffed animals, etc.
At the time, we were living with my FIL and his wife, who have two high school daughters. I always kept up with our stuff, even though we were staying in a teeny tiny bedroom in a pretty small house, I did 97% of all the cleaning for the household while we lived there, if I didn’t, everything went to shit.
Shortly after the box of toys arrived, I had to leave on short notice to go back to our hometown to see my mom. I didn’t have time to fully top-to-bottom clean the house and there was some odds and ends around, but the toy box was in the basement/den and mostly out of the way, that space wasn’t used except for laundry.
When I got back, my father in law jokingly mentioned about a couple of the silk square scarves being on the ground and his wife almost slipping on them, and throwing them away. They were my grandmothers. I only have 1 left I think.
It’s been a year and I’m heartbroken. I’m so confused as to why they would have thrown them away instead of just throwing it in our room or into the toy box. There’s no way they could have known but I never threw away any of their belongings or when people leave things laying around my house. I can replace parts for the tea set that were missing a plate and spoon and cup for, but those scarves are irreplaceable. I’m the least sentimental person ever when it comes to material objects, but for some reason this is just breaking my heart.
I talked to my mom, who doesn’t care about heirloom things at all, she said it’s okay and that it happens, they’re toys and things happen to toys. But I’be still just got this knot in my stomach 😔
