Landlord Advice for Mold Help
Post Body

To make a long story long, my partner and I have been in a rental home with this leasing company for over a year. We had what looked like slight mold when we moved in, which was addressed begrudgingly a couple months later by them. Itā€™s been a hassle to get them to inspect it, and then give us solutions, not come, and then do it all over it again. Finally (maybe a couple months after move in) they proceed to paint over the molded area that resides in our hallway, claiming that was the only solution. Weā€™re really not that dumb but in this economy, we canā€™t afford to move out so we take what they say or promise with a grain of salt. We made sure to report this mold in this Move-In paperworkā€” But since that initial turn in sheet, they scheduled Roof-People to come without our knowledge and they stepped a hole in one of our back closets. We fibbed & told the Renters we never used that closet so they couldnā€™t somehow pin it on us; But our holiday decor, and xmas tree, were in there and all suffered bad mold due to the closet being shut all the time, with the flow of cold air in the roof. We threw our stuff out and showed them in a later inspection that the closet is severely molded through. It looks like a green crime scene and my OCD is flipping out the more I think about that closet or even looking at our hallway. Another ā€œbonusā€ is somehow our bathroom is affected by this mold issue as well. They never told us a solution with the bathroom. I donā€™t even remember them painting that in the beginning. One thing I know is this company, told us to keep our doors open in this house since the doors are all connected in the hall and it gets pretty chilly. We have been of course but the last time they came over they alluded to SHAVING of the bottom of the doors. My partner explained due to them likely not believing we actually keep the doors open, of course after the man left our house so I couldnā€™t exactly question his assumption. Iā€™m trying not to forget anything but in the provided pictures are our hallway and bathroom, taken no more than a couple days ago. Newly in GA, USA. So I have zero idea on what the landlords laws are besides ā€œthey just have to provide a habitable homeā€ Google is vague- but I donā€™t know if I should contact Code Enforcementā€¦ and whether that would cost me my living place. It just seems a whole lot of back and forth and after a year with this same issue, they wonā€™t do anything to properly fix it. Resulting in being worried if itā€™s even safe to live here with this going on. I did read somewhere that we might be able to withhold rent if a big issue but Iā€™m not sure if thatā€™s the best. Any help on how I can move forward or what my next step is with Mold & Landlords, would be appreciated. Thank you, xx.
