Hello to everybody!
TL;DR I'm brewing for a "Neoform Agent" deck and seeking suggestions.
I was disassembling the [[Neoform]] deck I made a couple of years ago I grew bored of (a pretty linear Allosaurus Rider into Griselbrand, Neobrand deck), and I made the mistake of looking back at neoform, as it has been one of my favorite cards in each format I had the chance to play it in, especially as an enabler for toolbox-y decks and less as a straight combo piece.
The main strategy of the deck is to cascade into Neoform with either Shardless Agent and Bloodbraid Elf (and I'm using the Elf because other 3 CMC cascading cards don't provide a body to be sacced with Neoform) and pick and choose the best 4 CMC creature for that specific game state, but I'm still pinning down the proportions of the cards I'd like in it.
- Core - 4x [[Neoform]], 4x [[Shardless Agent]], 3/4x [[Bloodbraid Elf]] (12-ish cards)
With the cascade decks going rampant, my current plan is to build something similar (planning to switch [[Chrashing Footfalls]] out to hit neoform on cascade by letting it be the only target) both with [[Shardless Agent]] and to a lesser extent with the elf; therefore, Shardless Agent would functionally be a 3 CMC tutor put in play for any 4 CMC creature in the deck, who gives a very very good [[Green Sun's Zenith]] impression.
- 4 CMC Creature Toolbox (12-ish cards)
The idea is to make it be a toolbox-y midrange deck able to adapt by virtue of tutoring the better-suited card in every situation, kinda like OG Green Sun Zenith. Therefore the 4 CMC creature cards should be one-ofs or rarely two-ofs suited for aggro (such as [[Questing Beast]], [[Halana and Alena, Partners]], [[Shaman of the Great Hunt]]...), cards for the long-game (such as [[Timeless Witness]]) and cards more suited for tempo/control (such as [[Subtlety]], [[Profaner of the Dead]], [[Wicked Wolf]]...).
- Split/Other Cards: 3x [[Incubation // Incongruity]] (10-ish cards)
The way to achieve a lower mana curve is to exploit cascade rulings, as usual. My favorite one alongside Neoform has always been (since WAR standard) Incubation // Incongruity: the first mode is thought to be an alternate way to scour the deck for a Shardless Agent and the second one acts as a bad removal piece on a pinch. For the rest of the split cards, I'm thorn between [[Dead // Gone]] or [[Fire // Ice]], then, surprisingly [[Reason // Believe]]. The latter can be a one-drop to set up next turns as well as a potentially alternate way to achieve card advantage if I add some additional way to scry in the creatures.
I'm also considering [[Rift Sower]] as a one-drop able to fix the mana base from T3 onward and being an alternate target for Neoform, but by including 2, I'll make Bloodbraid Elf whiff 20% of the times, which is not a lot but still...
- 5/6 CMC Up-chain: 2x [[Goblin Dark-Dwellers]] (4-ish cards)
Now, Bloodbraider elf will cascade half of the times into Shardless Agent first, which itself cascades into neoform, and half of the times only into neoform. In the first case, I'd sac the agent and access the toolbox, but in the latter I'll cascade into a 5 CMC creature, which I should include either way since I'd like to have the option to cast neoform on a 4 CMC creature.
Here I think to exploit [[Goblin Dark-Dwellers]]. Goblin Dark-Dwellers on ETB casts an instant or sorcery from your grave, thus immediately proccing neoform. This can be used to skip a step of the chain and go from a 4 CMC to a 6 CMC. I thought about [[Combustible Gearhulk]] due to the high average CMC, but I'm sure it can be improved significantly.
The whole GDD into 6 CMC line could be straight up dropped for a couple of Cavalier of Thorns/Gales/Whatever though, maybe it's just straight up better.
- Mana Base: 24-ish lands. Nothing strange here, even if it'll require a lot of work since it's very mana intensive.
If you're still here and reading through my nonsense, thank you so much!
What do you think about it? In the Temur Magical Christmas-land, I'm envisioning... what would be the most back-breaking 6 CMC Neoform target in this case? How about strong solid midrange creatures at 4?
