Would my homebrew mono red burn deck be viable in a “casually competitive” environment?
Post Body

Game type is BO1, so no sideboard. I don’t think I could build a sideboard for the deck without disrupting its function, anyway.

Here is the deck list

The game plan is extremely straightforward.

Ramp with [[Mox Amber]], [[Ornithopter of Paradise]], and/or [[Braid of Fire]] to get two [[Darksteel Myr]], [[Furnace of Rath]], and [[Toralf, God of Fury]] out as early as possible.

Afterward, I would cast [[Insult]], setting up my end game.

Then simply cast [[Lightning Bolt]], [[Play With Fire]], or [[Wild Slash]] targeting one of the Myrs.

Bounce that damage back and forth between the Myrs a few times, with the amount of damage increasing each time it bounces because of Furnace and Toralf.

After 3-4 bounces, it should be enough to end the game with 34 damage. And if my opponent is playing a lifegain deck, I can continue this loop indefinitely, until it reaches the required amount of damage to eliminate them.

If they’re playing a token deck, depending on the toughness and quantity of the tokens, I can save some time and just bounce the damage off of their tokens instead of needing to have 2 Myrs, making the deck much faster. I know this is a niche scenario, but still worth considering, in my opinion.

What is also extremely worthy of note is that I have never actually played Modern before. I just have a few friends that play and they’ve convinced me to finally build a deck. I primarily play EDH. So maybe I have no idea what I’m doing and this deck sucks ass. I mean, I’m 100% sure it’s not great — a 6 card, 18 mana combo isn’t good, even by casual standards — but my hope is that I can play everything ahead of curve and keep it on the field to win by turn 4 or 5. The heavy bias toward 1-mana instants and the flexibility of Toralf’s flip side to use as pseudo-control hopefully will facilitate this.

InB4: “Just build (insert meta deck) noob”.

I’m intentionally not doing this for a few reasons.

  1. I like brewing. It’s the reason I play EDH over any other format.

  2. My friends also like brewing. So they don’t have any meta decks either.

  3. While we do play competitively, we are not playing competitive magic. We keep track of W/L/D and whoever has the worst ratio at the end of the month buys a round of drinks and food for the group.

  4. We don’t play at an LGS. We play at a local tea house. So no need for meta decks anyway.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this. I’m open to suggestions and advice, so feel free to give some constructive criticism!

(Side note: it’s interesting that it works out to be the same amount of damage after 4 or 3 bounces, regardless of whether I start with 2 or 3 damage respectively. Funny how math works.)

Edit: not sure why I’m getting downvoted. It seems some people don’t like having discussions about brewing in modern.

Sorry I asked. I’ll be sure to keep my brews to myself in the future.
