Standard disclaimer that league results are not indicative of the general metagame. They are selected for variety, not proportional representation.

65 lists today! I feel like the last few sets of results have been big, and while (to my knowledge) we still don't have definite criteria for how they're collating these sets, it does seem like people are having a good time and there are a lot of FNM viable decks in the format. Every new league dump has at least one deck that makes me go, "wait, what the heck is that," which certainly makes my work here more fun.

At the same time, people have been talking about whether that same diversity holds true at the top tables. With Expressive Iteration getting hit with the banhammer in Legacy, there's speculation that the same fate awaits it in Modern. Is it getting a bit of a pass because there are a lot of Izzet fans out there? Probably. Is Murktide just being held back by a disproportionate number of 45% WR pilots? Potentially. Would taking out what is arguably the format's best card advantage spell bring Thoughtseize back to the forefront? As a BG enthusiast, I wouldn't complain. Why am I asking myself these questions? I don't know.

Editorializing over, spice begin!

  • Bant Martyr Hawk: qUaBaTcHiEs taught me that [[Righteous Valkyrie]] was a card. Thanks, qUaBaTcHiEs!
  • Naya Titan Flicker?: When I come across a new deck, I look to the 4-ofs to show me the broad gameplan the pilot wants to execute. Nitreglyze is playing a full set of [[Knight of the White Orchid]] and [[Mwonvuli Acid-Moss]], among other things. I might just need to step back and let a professional handle this one.
  • Mono-B Burn: EDIT: forgot to include this initially! DieselGuzzler posted a great write-up here, so check it out!
  • Temur Liquimetal: Liquimetal Coating Karn = blowing up one of your opponent's lands every turn. I want to know if Rakdosn had any clean sweep wins where their opponent had no permanents left on the board.
  • Grixis Control: If I ever want to know if Grixis Control is viable, I start by looking for Gods_Shadow in the results. I still won't be able to win with it, but seeing it feels good nonetheless.
  • Tameshi Combo: ilovelamp covers a u/daviusminimus original. For those unfamiliar, the main combo is Tameshi in play and Lotus Bloom in play or in the graveyard. Activating Tameshi to return Bloom to play and a land to your hand will net you two mana (or three if the land is untapped). Do this enough to cast Cultivator Colossus, then return all those lands to play, draw more cards, and get even MORE mana. Use that mana and Wargate or Eladamri's Call to get Valakut and Dryad, then Colossus again to get enough Valakut triggers to win the game. Easy peasy.
  • Mono-B Midrange: gimmeblood must like removing things, because this list removes cards from graveyards, hands, and libraries, all sorts of permanents from play, and even abilities from lands. Black can be "greatness, at any cost," but it can also be "screw you, you get nothing," and it's good to be reminded of that sometimes.
  • Mono-R One Flame Combo: 79Au196 takes their midrange Obosh list with a side of combo finish. I don't have a lot to say about it; I just like it.
  • UR Hellraiser Control: freakunasty proves that aspiringspike lists aren't all just a flash in the pan. Sometimes, they're two flashes in the pan.
