Standard disclaimer that league results dumps are not indicative of the general metagame. They are selected for variety and not proportional representation. I did do some digging under the hood of the deck lists that are provided on the new site, and one thing I noted was the cards aren't just names, they also have an ID associated with them. This ID presumably represents the specific printing of the card, so MH1 Yawgmoth and TSR Yawgmoth have different IDs. I'm wondering if whatever is collating things over there is looking at this ID instead of the card names, which might explain the uncanny frequency with which two Yawgmoth lists that are definitely within the old 20-card limit of each other keep making it into the dumps. I might write something to check more thoroughly, but in the meantime, nothing to do but talk about what we're getting.

The first thing to note is Underworld Breach has more or less completed its shift from combo piece to value card alongside Dragon's Rage Channeler, Mishra's Bauble, and Lightning Bolt. There were five decks playing at least a copy or two of Breach with full sets of Bolt, Bauble, and DRC to power it up and pay it off by doming the opponent repeatedly or drawing a bunch of cards. The most aggressive of these decks are going for Soul-Scar Mage and a suite of prowess cards, while the slower ones opt for Ragavan and Ledger Shredder (or, in one case, Kroxa and Death's Shadow). My plan going forward is to label any Breach decks containing Grinding Station as "Combo Breach," but otherwise assume the value plan is the new standard.

The other card making a surprisingly varied showing is Stoneforge Mystic, showing up in seven different lists ranging from Thopter Sword to taxes to a BW Grief/Solitude list I decided was enough like the BR lists to share the name "Scam." If you weren't around for her unbanning, it caused a flurry of brewing beyond anything I had seen at that point (eclipsed only by the insanely huge league dumps after MH1 and 2 came out) and I'm happy to see that she's found some homes. I'm also glad that Kaldra Compleat hasn't totally taken over for Batterskull either, with the more midrange lists playing a copy of both. When deck space gets tight though, one's gotta go, and it ain't the bigger, indestructible-r one.

Lastly, the full image gallery for ONE is out! It seems like it won't be hugely impactful in Modern, but naturally, as soon as I say that, something is going to turn out to be busted. So far, most of the interest I've seen has been around [[Venerated Rotpriest]] as a combo card with [[Groundswell]] Ground Rift and/or [[Spellskite]], which sounds kinda bad, but also pretty fun. I've also heard the full spectrum of opinions from Amulet Titan players about [[The Mycosynth Gardens]], so look out for that one. If nothing else, I'm looking forward to playing in the prerelease, saying I'm going to do more limited, then not doing it.

Spice & Highlights:

  • Mono-R Four-ofs | MHayashi brings us the most aesthetically satisfying list in the results. If you want to try this list out, I recommend cutting the Blood Moons from the sideboard and replacing them with nothing.
  • RW Stoneblade | I don't know what to tell you. I just like midrange-y SFM lists, and apparently Stubz does too. There's nothing crazy happening here, just good, fair Magic.
  • Griselbook | On the opposite end of the fairness spectrum, we find susurrus_mtg. [[Time of Need]]! [[Profane Tutor]]! The only thing better than fair Magic is annihilator 6.
  • 4c Enchantress | twimist wants all the mana, and they know how to get it. Jeskai Ascendancy untapping Sanctum Weaver and any lands you've managed to make into creatures with Destiny Weaver looks like an incredible way to win a game of Magic (or ten, in this case).
  • GR Assault Loam | Few cards have as special a place in my heart as Life from the Loam, so seeing twop's deck was a real treat. Given the way the other DRC/Bauble decks are moving, it was surprising not to see an Underworld Breach or two, but I suppose if you're going to play an enchantment that turns your graveyard into damage, why not play the cooler one?
