Acting Premier model-putrid issues a statement on the Perth bushfire situation
Post Body

"Good evening. The Premier is currently on leave, and as such, I will be serving as acting Premier for the duration of their leave. I would like to briefly address the tragic situation unfolding in Perth's north east. This is a dangerous situation, and as acting Premier, I would like to extend my sincere condolences to those who have lost their homes. I am pleased to report that, so far at least, there has been no loss of life.

I am in touch with the relevant authorities, and you can keep track of the latest advice on the Emergency WA website. There are evacuation centres located at Brown Park Recreation Complex, Swan Active Midland, and Swan Active Beechboro. Again, I'd like to stress that this is a developing situation and that Emergency WA has the latest updates, but currently, areas of the Shires of Mundaring, Chittering and Northam, as well as the City of Swan, are under bushfire emergency warning. If you are in these areas -- again, check the Emergency WA website- and it is safe to evacuate, then I am giving you one message. Evacuate now.

This is a highly dangerous situation. I do not want to see any fatalities occuring out of these bushfires. Don't delay with this, leave everything except the kids and the pets, and go to safety, go to the evacuation centres, go to friends and family if you can, just please, leave now and stay safe. Travel in a western direction, and get yourself to safety while you can. Do not return home until the authorities advise you to.

There are areas where it is too dangerous to leave, which are available on the Emergency WA website, and this is the advice we are issuing. Stay sheltered in your home, before the fire, away from the fire front. Close all doors and windows and turn off evaporative aircon, but keep water running through it if you can. Stay in a room where you can exit with water. Wear long sleeves and trousers, ideally made from cotton or wool. If your home catches on fire and the conditions inside are unbearable, leave to somewhere that has already been burnt.

Again, this is a rapidly developing situation. I've just now been informed that a total fire ban has been declared for tomorrow. Be prepared to leave if you're in a Watch and Act area. Tomorrow morning, I'll be heading down to speak with evacuees and local authorities at evacuation centres. I urge every resident to keep a close eye out on the Emergency WA website to keep an update on the latest advice. Stay safe.
