There's a big lie the opposition has been peddling this election. It is that the plan that the Greens have to move our economy towards renewable and sustainable sources of energy is unviable. Economic suicide, they're calling it. And given this is a mining town, I can see why you might agree with that. And I know you're probably sick of people who aren't from here lecturing you about the evils of the mining industry or whatever. So instead, I'll give you some facts.
The fossil fuel industry is dying, and it's becoming less and less profitable. There was a study from the UK Energy Research Centre that showed that renewables have the potential to generate almost 10 times the amount of jobs than the coal and gas industries.
And if we get in early, invest quickly, imagine all the money and jobs we could generate for Western Australia. We will work to create locally driven renewable jobs, especially focusing on areas that are reliant on the fossil fuel industry. This is the perfect place for renewables like solar, and if we get in now, our state will be massively richer for it.
And you might not be convinced, still. But let me tell you what the Greens will do with that money for regional WA. We will work to strengthen rural health by increasing funding to the Patient Assisted Travel Scheme, and here in Paraburdoo, we're going to build a new hospital for local residents so you can get the care you need, and create a fund for rural hospital upgrades nationwide.
Public transport in rural areas has also been sorely neglected. For both freight and passenger travel, we need investment fast, and the Greens will work on delivering high speed rail connection between rural centres. We need to act fast on foreign ownership of Western Australian land, as it's a risk to our national security and hurts our regions to not have Australian land in Australian hands, and so the Greens will work to introduce strong regulations on foreign ownership of WA land.
And as for Paraburdoo? There are a few local projects here I would like to spotlight. I've already mentioned our plan for a new hospital, but you know what I've heard residents here want? A shaded outdoor playground right here at the primary school, an upgrade to the bowling club turf, and an upgraded security system at the men's shed. I can't promise we'll deliver these, but if we get elected tomorrow, I promise that I'll keep my eye on these projects personally, and an eye on regional WA and making sure our state, not just Perth, thrives.
