Post Body

Firstly, I would like to begin by acknowledging the Yawuru people, Traditional Custodians of the land on which we meet today, and pay my respects to their Elders past and present. I extend that respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples here today. Across the state last election, we saw a wave of support for secessionists across our state, and I can see why that might be appealing to so many people. Especially in the Aboriginal community, the duopoly of Liberal and Labor has failed to deliver for our first peoples. Why not vote for a shakeup?

But don't be fooled. When they were actually voted into power, they didn't deliver for you, they just sat into Parliament on their cushy salaries, and they didn't introduce legislation, they didn't care for their communities, they did so little that it honestly felt like no one noticed when they dissolved. Don't be fooled either by this new group of secessionists. They're two sides of the same coin.

But I don't just want to criticise. I want to bring forward the Greens' platform on First Nations peoples. We have shown we can deliver in government, and this is what we will do if you bring us back to office. We will bring the Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples into Western Australian law, protecting and preserving the rights of Aboriginal people to their heritage, land and autonomy.

As a matter of urgency, the Mining Act must be amended to give First Nations people a seat at the table, and ensure that no projects go ahead without informed consent of the people living there, to prevent hostile land grabs from foreign gas and oil businesses of Aboriginal communities. And we'll abolish mandatory youth sentencing, which disproportionately effects young Aboriginal children.

In case you don't believe that the Greens will deliver, and frankly, I don't blame you, then judge us on our record. We have kickstarted this state's shift to renewable energy by creating a renewable fund and subsidising electric vehicles in the latest budget. We introduced basic rights for renters as part of our rental warrant of fitness law. If you put us into the driver's seat of government, I pledge to you that the Greens will deliver results.
